Several years ago, I met with Ravi and Geeta Patel, a brother and sister filmmaking team, who were working on finishing their documentary. They wanted my help creating some animated clips to pepper throughout the film to keep the story rolling along. I first had to design animated characters of Ravi, Geeta and their Mom and Dad, as well as a few supporting characters as well.
It was a trail and error way of working, since the cartoon characters had to look like the real people without insulting them in anyway. After a month or so, of coming up with the characters, it was time to breakdown their soundtrack into storyboards. As a documentary, there was no official script and so, the current cut of the film became the script to follow.
"Meet the Patels" took 6 years to complete and is now showing in selected theaters across the country. Its a really fun and interesting film about finding love in the modern Indian/American culture through the life of Ravi Patel.
Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times reviewed the film and liked it too!
The first two shot in the trailer below has the animation I worked on, so don't blink...
